“The rationale of this study rests on a protracted social and global problem: the large number of out-of-school adolescents and youth, especially those living in adverse life circumstances. Young people who are excluded from education often face multiple and overlapping disadvantages. Globally, 263 million children, adolescents, and youth in the age group of 6–17 years are out of school, according to United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO’s) Institute of Statistics (UIS dataset, February 2018). Of these, about 76 percent are adolescents and youth of lower- and upper-secondary school age, and more than 150 million youth are from regions facing fragile and conflict situations. Considering that currently 2 billion people are affected by fragility, conflict, and violence, and that by 2030, 46 percent of the global poor are likely to be exposed to fragile and conflict situations, complex life risks such as forced displacement and related educational risks will continue to be prevalent. These also impact displaced youth living in host communities, where they tend to be exposed to socio-economic challenges.”
