Safer Internet Day is a global celebration organised by the Safer Internet Centre. The slogan for 2018 is, “Create, Connect and Share Respect: A better internet starts with you”.

The internet is a great place to find educational material. Open educational resources (OER) by their nature are teaching and learning materials that are freely available online for anyone to access. The internet is therefore a large repository of very useful and essential information and as such needs to be a safeguarded.
Here are some tips for creating a safe online environment from JISC:
- Review your current practices to see if there are areas that require improvement.
- Develop or update an online safety policy that takes into account current technology and social media.
- Provide training to your staff and students so that they are aware of what are acceptable.
- Engage with services such as web filtering and monitoring that will prevent inappropriate and or illegal ads and pages.
